History: Here!
Personality: The Charismatic Detective. The Detective Prince. In Tokyo, these titles are well known for the teenage idol Goro Akechi due to his handsome looks and light, affable demeanor. Rarely without a pleasant smile on his face, he's friendly and polite, if a little distant. Particularly for his audience, he'll offer a joke now and then to lighten the mood— but make no mistake that he is very serious about his job and about bringing justice to criminals. He's hard-working, charming, and so disarming, you'll feel like he's doing you favor when he asks you for one.

A flawless mask, carefully and painstakingly crafted over several years. One he's worn for so long it's grown into him, becoming as natural and effortless as breathing, but not necessarily becoming any more genuine.

What lays beyond that mask contrasts as sharply as day and night. Akechi is a cold, ruthless young man who will stop at nothing to take revenge on his father, the man he holds responsible for ruining his childhood and entire life— and that includes becoming Shido's personal assassin in order to gain his trust. The justice that he seeks to uphold isn't for the general public but for himself, as well as his mother, who was driven to suicide from the shame of birthing an illegitimate son. He's malicious, vengeful and hopelessly cynical.

... and he knows it. He's not so far gone that his morals have gone completely bankrupt, and he's aware of the atrocities he's committed and knows that his emotional state is utterly twisted— and he hates himself for it. Coupled with the fact that he has no close friends to rely on (sadly, the closest is in fact the person he had thought he murdered), his isolation and sins cause him to believe himself to be a worthless person of no more value than trash. It's very possible that even if he has regretted his actions enough to consider changing tactics that the hopelessness of being too far gone discouraged him from ever making a change.

And he has shown to be regretful. Throughout the game, especially around the time Akechi really starts getting involved personally with the Thieves, he has shown that he regrets the actions he has taken and also finds them repulsive (as when he got a little sick at the sight of Okumura's death). This coupled with the numerous hints he gives about his position suggests that he has found himself trapped in a reprehensible situation far beyond what he'd initially anticipated. Given that his conversation shown with Shido over the phone shows that Shido is, in no uncertain terms, willing to have Akechi killed should he betray him, it may well be possible that being his assassin became just as much about survival as it had about vengeance.

His crippling loneliness and desperation for validation and approval is very likely to be what had initially gotten him suckered into such a terrible situation. Shido's Shadow in fact boasts that he used praise to manipulate Akechi and had been the one to teach him how to make full use of his abilities— that is, most likely, how to cause mental shutdowns, i.e. brain death in intended targets. While he had intended for a long time to make Shido suffer for abandoning himself and his mother, some part of him still naturally craved, as a child towards their parent is wont to do, for his father's acceptance and compassion. And it's not just his father's acceptance he seeks, but just about anyone who gives him the time of day, including society and the Phantom Thieves themselves.

However, part of his problem is his cynicism and, tangentially, his inability to trust others. This likely stems from a combination of his jaded view of the world as well as the sobering realization that there likely isn't any sane person who would honestly be willing to have his back even after knowing the truth of what all he's done. As a consequence of this, while he sometimes reaches out for help he just as often pulls back, likely for fear of inevitable rejection. Thus he has difficulty forming genuine bonds and can't bring himself to trust the Thieves, or at the very least... not until it's too late.

But despite all of the hardships and pain he's had to endure, there may still be some light within him. The fact that Featherman plays whenever he's at the cafe, along with Robin Hood's design, suggests genuine appreciation of a more benign form of justice and an interest in being a hero, maybe not just to be appreciated but to actually do good. After all, it isn't likely he would have such a strong self-loathing if he honestly didn't care about doing the right thing. It's particularly highlighted when he sacrifices himself in order to save the Phantom Thieves so that they can still take down Shido even though he can no longer personally exact his revenge.

And for all his attempts to stay distant, he still reaches rank 10 confidant status with the protagonist— an unbreakable bond. Morgana points out that he really does like Joker, which he can't refute, and it takes using his own ability on himself to break himself of his bonds to actually be able to go all out in his battle against the Thieves. Though he is jealous of the group and especially of Joker, there is none-the-less some amount of very real attachment there. Even though he was always the odd one out in the group, their time together as a team has had a significant impact on Akechi, who never truly had any good friends.

For all his selfishness and envy, however, Akechi does have his moments where he shows he genuinely cares about others, such as when he asks Sae out to eat to celebrate his accomplishments in light of making sure she doesn't neglect herself due to her incredible work ethic. In addition, in the manga anthology where he visits Akira for a day as a friend suggests a very earnest attempt at at least making a casual friend, though his gift (an entire fish) and his suggestion for what to make to bring to the Metaverse (a bomb) suggests an incredibly awkward teenage boy whose lack of social experience is at times painfully apparent.

Despite what a broken soul he is, he has gained a considerable amount of strength by being forced through incredibly stressful situations, not least of which is his time in the institution and in foster care, and less horrifically, his journey through Mementos and Palaces solo. In both of these situations he only had himself to rely on, and as such, he's become exceptionally skilled at being independent and surviving despite not having any security as far as other people went. While it's difficult to say how much Shido was involved with him financially, it is worth noting that he did hold a legitimate job (though he may have used illegitimate means, i.e. mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns, to further his career) and it is entirely possible that he was in fact completely financially independent— a remarkable achievement for any teenager, let alone an orphan.

Though some of himself is fabricated and much of himself is twisted, Akechi is, at his core, a lonely, hopeless and hurt teenager who is desperate for love and a place to fit in, but has lost all hope of ever being able to do so.
Abilities/Skills:
- Akechi is a Wildcard Persona user! So he can use potentially many Personas, though at the moment he only has two-- Robin Hood and Loki. (First phase lists Robin Hood's abilities, and second phase lists Loki's.)

- As part of Loki's abilities, Akechi has the ability to make another being go berserk. For people specifically, this means temporarily breaking the bonds they have with other people, i.e. causing the target to lose any feelings of familiarity or companionship for some amount of time. In the real world this is referred to as a "psychotic breakdown".

- Along with supernatural powers, he also has quite a bit of mundane physical strength from hobbies such as cycling and rock climbing, as well as experience in battle, only roughly as a team but especially adept solo, both one on one and one versus many.

- Akechi is quite adept in handling guns, as is evidenced when he pulls a gun off the guard in the interrogation room, twists on a silencer and shoots him all within the span of a couple of seconds, if even that.

- He's intelligent; he subconsciously remembered the peculiarity of Sae showing him the phone and was able to deduce that he had been tricked by the Phantom Thieves.

- He's charismatic, known not only for his good looks but his ability in handling those involved in a crime.

- Very articulate; he's careful in choosing his words to say precisely what he means (as well as to get the most favorable reaction).
Samples: Log style!
[He's had some time to... recover, at this point, from what had occurred back at home. He'd never quite be the same person again, that was for sure, but at least he felt like he had pulled himself together to an extent.]
I'd like to hear people's hypotheses on what might be the threat that has seemingly scared the natives into silence.

I personally remain unconvinced that this isn't all some elaborate psychological experiment. You'd be amazed at how much a group of people can hide with enough resources and influence.
